If the lean economy is causing you to cancel your trip to Crete, head on over to the Greek Village in Carlsbad. It is not the Greek Isles, but it's close.
Restaurant owners Aimilia and Kostas encourage everyone to dine, drink, and dance like the Greek Gods.
The couple from Crete has owned the restaurant in Carlsbad for 13 years, offering not only Greek food, but also a taste of Greek culture.
On Thursdays, Fridays. and Saturdays, there is live Greek music. "Everybody dances," Kostas said.
Even he leaves the kitchen to get into the act. "It's unique. You can't find this at other places," he said.
a belly dancer performs on Friday and Saturday nights.
Kostas said he believes life is too hectic and schedules too rigid, so he encourages his customers to linger a while, eat, drink and dance with their loved ones.
"When you find a good time, stay. You don't find that everyday in your life," he said.
Tanya Milkenkovich of San Marcos is a frequent visitor to the restaurant.
"It makes you feel you are in Greece," she said. "The music, the food, the whole atmosphere is intimate, friendly and jovial."
She said her favorite dish is the lamb shank fricassee prepared with a lemony sauce, artichokes, and romaine lettuce.
Lamb is a favorite at the restaurant, so it is prepared in a number of ways from rack of lamb to kebabs. The secret to its popularity is that it is prepared in a way that is not greasy, Kostas said.
Moussaka, made of eggplant, potatoes, beef and sauce, is another crowd pleaser. So is the saganaki flambe, kasseri cheese that is set afire.
Aimilia bakes kourabiedes from scratch. these are cookies that melt i the mouth. Boxes of the powdered sugar-covered delights are for sale at the front counter.
The restaurant also serves breakfast: Greek omelets, lamb chops and eggs, and a Greek meat pie, along with standard American fare.
Most o the dishes on the menu are expanded versions of family recipes with which Aimilia and Kostas grew up.
"We pay very close attention to the quality and the service to the people," Kostas said.
The couple came to the United States on their honeymoon in 1984.
"We saw America, we liked it and decided to stay," Kostas said.
At first they worked for others, then they opened a fast-food Greek restaurant in San Diego, before finding their way to Carlsbad.
"I think our dreams came true," Kostas said.
the couple said they feel at home with the restaurant's close proximity to the Flower Fields and the ocean.
"The ocean breezes give energy, wisdom, power, and fantasy for good production," Kostas said.
